Crossing It Off Is Half the Dopamine

Who else loves writing out a list just so you can check it off or dramatically cross it out? I won’t lie, I’m still very much this person. Maybe even worse now. I’ll put things in my digital calendar, then still feel the very real need to write them down by hand… just so I can cross them off later. There’s something deeply satisfying about it.

I’m part of that sweet-spot generation. I remember not having a phone because they were way too expensive when they first came out. I also remember finally getting a phone and a personal laptop and feeling wildly advanced. We had an Apple II when I was a kid. Black screen. Green text. Very high tech… at the time. ๐Ÿ˜„

This has been on my mind today because I’m organizing my week and staring down some big tasks I really want to complete. One of them is painting. I started painting years ago and basically hit a wall… and then stopped. I’m kind of notorious for projects left undone (I blame my dad ๐Ÿ˜‰).

What’s different now is that the medication has been making me feel like I can actually do things. And that’s weird to say out loud. It feels like I’ve gained time in my days, even though the reality is the time was always there. It just felt different before. I’d lose track of time by the hour and feel so weighted down that finishing tasks felt almost impossible, like something I just couldn’t quite reach.

Now, having systems, lists, and routines feels less like pressure and more like support. And that sense of accomplishment from crossing something off? It actually feels attainable again.

So now I’m curious.
What systems do you use to keep yourself organized?
Are you fully pro-digital, or do you still need a pen, paper, and a good solid cross-off moment to feel complete?
